PhD position in Artificial Photosynthesis at University of Basel / SNI

The Yao Group at the Department of Chemistry, University of Basel, is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position in the cutting-edge field of Artificial Photosynthesis, supported by the Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI). This interdisciplinary project aims to explore artificial photosynthesis at sub-zero temperatures within cryo-protective lipidic mesophase nanoconfinement. The PhD candidate will be primarily based at the University of Basel with regular stays at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI).

Project Overview:
The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team working at the intersection of chemistry, soft matter, and nanotechnology. The research aims to develop new strategies to achieve efficient artificial photosynthesis under extreme conditions, with potential applications in sustainable energy and environmental technologies.

Your position

  • Conduct experimental research on artificial photosynthesis in nanoconfinement.
  • Utilize scattering, spectroscopy, microscopy, and other analytical techniques to investigate photochemical and photophysical processes.
  • Collaborate with researchers at the University of Basel and PSI, contributing to interdisciplinary projects.
  • Present research findings at international conferences and publish results in high-impact scientific journals.

Your profile

  • A Master's degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, or a related field.
  • An excellent track record in both academic study and research projects.
  • Strong background in physical chemistry, preferable also in photochemistry, biophysics and materials characterization.
  • Experience with CO2 fixation and nanoconfinement is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in advanced analytical methods such as spectroscopy, scattering, and microscopy.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, creativity, strong motivation, self-management and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and spoken.

We offer you

  • A stimulating and interdisciplinary research environment at the University of Basel and at PSI.
  • Access to state-of-the-art laboratories, equipment and large-scale facilities.
  • Opportunities for professional development through workshops, conferences, and collaborations.
  • A competitive salary and benefits package.
