The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) seeks to appoint a Full Professor of Statistics with 1st April 2025. The position is offered in accordance with §98 of the 2002 Universities Act in the form of an ongoing contract.

The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, the “Alma Mater Viridis”, is the University of Sustainability and Life Sciences. It is BOKU's task to make a key contribution to the conservation and protection of resources for future generations through its wide variety of expertise. Combining natural sciences, engineering plus social and economic sciences, its aim is to increase knowledge of the ecologically and economically sustainable use of natural resources. With 10,000 students and over 2,900 staff members, BOKU is one of Europe’s leading life science universities.

The professorship is located at the current Department of Space, Landscape and Infrastructure and is intended to contribute to data-based research at BOKU in its entire breadth. Within the department, it contributes in particular to the research fields of climate change and modelling of environmental data (including statistical data analysis, software and method development). At the future Department of Natural Sciences and Sustainable Resources (active from 1st January 2025), it will fit into the canon of natural science disciplines. At BOKU, the institute contributes to all BOKU fields of expertise in the form of interdisciplinary cooperation and transdisciplinary research. Important topics are climate change and global change, analysis and modelling of spatio-temporal (environmental) processes, natural hazards and risks, modelling of bioprocesses as well as ecosystem research and analysis including social statistics.

The professorship assigned to the Institute of Statistics is intended to strengthen interdisciplinary research at BOKU in the field of statistical data analysis and modelling. Given the variety of tasks, a broad spectrum of methods has to be covered, including computational statistics, statistical learning, extreme value statistics, geostatistics, cluster analysis and functional data analysis, as well as analysis and visualisation of high-dimensional data. Process-based statistical modelling approaches will also be emphasised. In addition, the holder of the chair is expected to contribute to the Data Science Initiative at BOKU, both in the context of methodological talks and through willingness to cooperate within BOKU.

Teaching focuses on basic statistics in the Bachelor's programmes and advanced statistics courses in various Master's programmes at BOKU. The Institute's teaching activities cover almost all degree programmes. At the Master's level, in-depth and specialised lectures on computational statistical methods with concrete application reference are to be offered. In addition, the professorship makes an important contribution to the doctoral schools at BOKU by supervising and teaching in cooperation with the participating disciplines in order to strengthen the methodological expertise in statistics and data science.

According to these tasks, a broad competence in the application of statistical methods in engineering and natural sciences as well as sufficient background knowledge in statistical theory must be demonstrated in the application.
