About the HZI
Scientists at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) investigate the mechanisms of infectious diseases and the defence against them. Subsequently, they develop the results of basic research systematically towards medical and pharmaceutical application. The scientific questions we are trying to answer include:
To solve these problems, we investigate pathogens that are clinically relevant or can be used as models for the research of infections. Understanding the mechanisms of infections then contributes to the development of novel, patient-tailored solutions for diagnosis, prevention, treatment as well as surveillance and control of infectious diseases.
Goal
The HZI addresses the infectious disease challenges of the 21st century. Therefore, the centre has implemented its competitive program “Infection Research”. The programme puts particular emphasis on the transfer of research results to application, on individualised infection medicine and the increased use of data-driven approaches for infection research, including omics-technologies and machine learning tools.
HZI is Germany’s largest academic institution dedicated exclusively to infection research. In line with its mission, the centre develops new strategies for the early detection, prevention, and treatment of infectious diseases. HZI researchers investigate bacterial and viral pathogens of high clinical relevance, elucidate their interactions with the host‘s immune system and explore new ways to prevent and combat infections.
The central mission of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) is to address the infectious disease challenges of the 21st century. To make this possible, HZI has implemented its competitive programme “Infection Research”. The programme puts particular emphasis on the transfer of research results to application. In line with the mission of the Helmholtz Association, HZI pursues long-term and strategic infection research addressing one of the greatest health threats facing society.
HZI scientists promote clinical and pharmaceutical innovation by combining groundbreaking fundamental research with clinically oriented investigation and drug development. HZI's unique interdisciplinary approach enables development of novel, patient-tailored solutions for diagnosis, prevention, treatment as well as surveillance and control of infectious diseases. This will put HZI in a key position to help compensate for the withdrawal of the pharmaceutical industry from the development of anti-infectives, in particular antibiotics.
