PhD position in Hybrid Quantum Systems

Reference number REF 2024-0491

In the Hybrid Quantum Systems Laboratory, we will develop nanofabricated devices to create interfaces between cold atoms, light and motion. We will use these devices to create quantum states of mechanical motion. If you have a passion for highly collaborative, experimental research and want to learn advanced technical skills ranging from nanofabrication to atomic and optical physics, this is for you!

Project description
The Hybrid Quantum Systems Laboratory at Chalmers is a new laboratory at Chalmers that will exploit the exquisite control over light enabled by photonics. Nanofabrication of photonic integated circuits and mechanical oscillators with ultralow loss is at the heart of our research. Cold atoms are the third ingredient, and we will use the tools of atomic physics to cool and trap atoms and couple their quantum states to light and mechanical motion. By exploiting this interaction, we will probe quantum physics at the macroscopic scale. The systems we develop will be exquisite spin sensors, enabling applications in biosensing and material characterization.

Information about the division and the department
In the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience, MC2, state-of-the art research in various fields such as micro-electronics, photonics, microwave techniques and quantum technology are being conducted. The department features a 1500 square meter clean room with all equipment needed for micro- and nanofabrication as well as many labs for characterization.

Major responsibilities
As a PhD student, your main focus will be on conducting research and developing your skills--both technical and transferable. You will work as a part of a team and will be expected to collaborate effectively with a diverse and international group. As one of the first PhD students in the group, you will play a large role in the design, construction and operation of new and complex experiments, which means you will learn all the skills necessary to lead a research project.

Qualifications
A masters degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Nanotechnology, Photonics or Electrical Engineering is required. Exceptional candidates with a Bachelor's degree may qualify in some cases. Fluency in written and spoken English is necessary. Experience with any of the following is beneficial: experimental atomic physics, optics, photonics, nanofabrication, nanomechanics or cryogenics. If you are unsure about your qualifications, please contact us.

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
