Position Description 


Harvard University’s Department of Mathematics is looking for exceptional educators and education leaders with a proven track record in coordinating large introductory courses to join the department as a Senior Preceptor in Mathematics.


The appointment is expected to begin July 1, 2025. It is a long-term position with an initial five-year appointment that is renewable afterward, contingent on performance, curricular need, position availability, and divisional dean approval.


Basic Qualifications


The successful applicant should have a graduate degree in mathematics, mathematics education, or a related field and a vision for mathematics’ vital role in the sciences and social sciences.

Essential qualities include initiative, excellent pedagogical and mathematical judgment, and the ability to lead a team.


Additional Qualifications


We seek applicants with a sophisticated understanding of teaching and learning informed by the research literature.

We are particularly drawn to candidates who can:

  • Effectively incorporate active learning techniques into their practice and mentor others to adopt active learning techniques successfully.
  • Make significant contributions to the Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, and Belonging (DIEB) initiatives within the mathematics community.
  • Exhibit proficiency in managing administrative tasks and excel at leading teams.
  • Demonstrate expertise in mentoring and professional development of fellow educators (graduate students, undergraduates, and junior faculty).

  4. A teaching/advising statement describing your philosophy and practices as well as your approach to creating a learning environment in which every student is encouraged to ask questions and share their ideas. It should also include your approach to course coordination.
  5. A sample lesson plan — on a calculus topic — that highlights how you teach for conceptual understanding, along with a description of the goals for each portion of the lesson and notes on how the lesson could be implemented by another instructor. Submitted under “Sample Syllabus.”
  6. A teaching portfolio containing evidence of pedagogical excellence, including teaching reviews, and any contributions to the scholarship on teaching and learning. Please indicate which, if any, courses were taught remotely, whether partially or in full, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Submitted under “Statement of Teahing Philosophy.”
  7. A service statement describing your efforts to strengthen academic communities, e.g., your department, institution, and/or professional societies.
