Adaptive mesh refinement in earth system modelling

What to expect:

The upcoming exascale computer architectures offer a variety of new possibilities for detailed earth system simulations. However, with the increase in performance comes an increase in complexity and requirements on the algorithms, software quality and scalability. The numerical solution of equations on uniformly highly resolved meshes exceeds the boundaries of even the largest super computers, i.e. currently for Climate-chemical simulations with 1km horizontal resolution. Since the amount of information of many atmospheric model variables depends on local and regional processes, we can use (dynamic) adaptive meshes to drastically reduce the required computing resources while maintaining the same computational accuracy. Moreover, the efficient usage of petascale and upcoming exascale machines requires a heterogeneous approach that leverages the advantages of massively parallel and energy efficient GPUs.

Therefore, we are looking for you to improve the development of our massively parallel adaptive mesh algorithms and their application in earth system modelling. Your tasks include:

  • Development of adaptive mesh algorithms in a large scientific software library
  • Development of interfaces to simulation environments
  • Extension of adaptive mesh data structures to enable the usage of GPUs
  • Supporting our project partners in extending their simulation applications with adaptive meshes
  • Optimization and evaluation of the developed algorithms
  • Benchmark studies on high-performance computers

If you enjoy scientific software development and want to become part of our team, we are looking forward to receiving your application. We are looking for highly motivated colleagues who identify with their work and inspire others. We also offer you the opportunity to contribute your own ideas and to initiate new projects on your own responsibility. You will be expected to present your work at international conferences and in scientific journals. We offer an exciting work environment where family friendliness and your health are top priority.

What we expect from you:

  • Master’s degree in mathematics, computer science or similar
  • experience in C/C++ software development
  • experience in numerical simulation or/and adaptive meshes
  • good experience with parallelization frameworks (i.e. MPI, OpenMP)
  • experience with GPU programming (i.e. CUDA)
  • experience in software engineering tools such as Git
  • excited to work with interdisciplinary teams
  • PhD is desirable

What we offer:

DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
