Research Data Management for Life Cycle Assessment


What to expect:

The focus of the DLR Institute for Data Science in Jena is to find solutions for the major challenges of the digitalisation age. The research focuses on the areas of data extraction and mobilisation, data management and preparation, and data analysis and intelligence.


The Working Group “Metadata Management” addresses topics in the area of semantic descriptions of data, development of ontologies and semantically enhanced systems. These topics are addressed in both DLR-internal as well third-party-funded projects.


The advertised position is in the context of life cycle assessment. It is part of several activities and projects to establish a modern and FAIR research data management in this domain.


Your task is the semantic enrichment of life cycle inventories – the underlying database of life cycles assessments. In collaboration with our partners, you develop suitable vocabularies and data models to describe life cycle inventory data in a FAIR way. Further, you establish a data repository to manage maintain life cycle inventories. You will make a significant contribution to life cycle assessments and by extension a sustainable future!


Your tasks include

  • Requirement engineering together with our project partners
  • Literature research and identifying state-of-the-art approaches in the area of descriptions of data and models in the area of a hydrogen economy
  • Development of vocabularies and ontologies for a hydrogen economy
  • Development and maintenance of a data and model catalogue
  • Evaluation and improvement of approaches and implementations
  • Publication and presentation of results at national and international conferences and within the project consortium
  • Supervision of students


What we expect from you:


  • Completed academic university degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or related areas (e.g., data science). Alternatives are other areas with a focus on Semantic Web.
  • Basic experience in independently addressing complex research challenges.
  • Proven programming skills (e.g., JavaScript, Python or Java.)
  • Joy of working in a scientific environment
  • Advanced skills in both written and spoken English
  • Basic skills in both written and spoken German
  • Willingness to travel (national/international) 
  • Applied experience working with knowledge graphs and related technologies (e.g., RDF and SPARQL) is a plus
  • Experience in GUI and UX design and implementation is a plus
