For our Institute of Future Fuels in Köln we are looking for a

Mechanical or Chemical Engineer, Physicist or similar (f/m/d)

Development of a unit for thermochemical air separation for solar nitrogen production

Das erwartet Sie:

Do you want to play an active role in shaping a sustainable future through your research? Then you've come to the right place!

Ammonia is not only an important raw material for fertilizer production, but is also being discussed as a sustainable fuel for shipping. In order to be able to produce it CO2-free, nitrogen as a starting material for ammonia synthesis must also be produced CO2-free. One innovative concept is air separation using a thermochemical cycle. In the first step, a redox material (metal oxide) is reduced at temperatures of around 700 °C. In the second step, it is cooled to approx. 350 °C in the absence of oxygen and then the redox material is oxidized with air. What remains is high-purity nitrogen. The process can now start again at step one. The temperatures required for both process steps can be provided by solar heat, making the process CO2-free.

A project has already shown that this principle works and that high-purity nitrogen can be produced on a small scale. However, the heat was still provided electrically. Now you can work on developing and demonstrating solar heat integration.

Your tasks during your doctoral studies are

- Development of the flow diagram of a solar reactor for air separation with heat recovery

- Design and development of a solar reactor for air separation

- Simulation of heat and mass transfer in the reactor

- Conducting experiments with the solar reactor for air separation

- Documentation, publication and presentation of scientific and technical results

DLR offers you the opportunity to continue your education by participating in further training measures as part of the DLR graduate program. Flexible working hours allow you to combine work and family life and we give you the freedom you need to fulfill your tasks.

You will be part of an interdisciplinary and international team of scientists from the fields of engineering, physics, chemistry and materials science. The department has experts in both modeling and experimental demonstration of thermochemical air separation who will be happy to support you.

Das erwarten wir von Ihnen:

  • University degree (Master) in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, physics or similar
  • Experience in experimental work, e.g. with test planning and execution, as well as in reactor design
  • Advanced knowledge of heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, reaction kinetics
  • Experience with numerical simulation of heat and mass transfer (e.g. Ansys, Comsol, Openfoam) would be a plus
  • Experience in the use of CAD software would be an advantage
  • Programming experience (e.g. Python) would be an advantage
  • Independent and structured way of working
  • Good communication skills
  • Fluency in English (knowledge of German is a plus)
